What affects 3D printing cost in Australia?


Most 3D printing services quote based on a mix of print time, material usage, setup/handling, and post-processing. Here are the main cost drivers:

  • Part size & volume: Larger parts usually mean more material and longer print time.
  • Print time: Fine layers, dense support, complex toolpaths and high-detail settings can increase production time.
  • Material choice: Standard materials are generally less expensive than engineering plastics such as ASA, Nylon and PC.
  • Quantity: Per-part pricing may improve with quantity where setup, handling and machine utilisation can be shared across the batch.
  • Tolerances & fit: Tight fits and critical dimensions may require a first article, tolerance adjustment or additional inspection.
  • Finishing: Sanding, priming, painting, inserts, or assembly add labour.
  • Design quality: A valid, print-ready CAD file is faster and less costly to process than a model requiring repair or redesign.
  • Setup and order value: Low-value jobs may include a setup fee. Solidium3D waives this fee once the order reaches AUD $250, and repeat orders of the same unchanged part may also qualify for a waiver.

Typical 3D printing price ranges (Australia)


The ranges below are broad budgeting references only. Actual pricing can fall outside them depending on geometry, material, quantity, finish, risk and production time.

Small parts (roughly palm-sized)

  • Prototype / one-off: typically from $30–$150 AUD
  • Small batch (10–50 pcs): typically from $15–$80 AUD per part

Medium functional parts

  • Prototype / one-off: typically from $120–$450 AUD
  • Small batch (10–50 pcs): typically from $60–$250 AUD per part

Large parts / assemblies

  • One-off large part: typically from $300–$1,500+ AUD
  • Large assemblies: can vary widely depending on splits, joints, and finishing

Tip: If a part exceeds the available build volume, it may need to be divided into sections and joined by the customer or as a separately quoted assembly service. Splitting adds labour and can affect alignment, strength and appearance.

Why can Australian pricing be higher than overseas?


Australian pricing reflects local labour, equipment, rent, quality control, communication and shorter domestic turnaround. Overseas manufacturing may offer lower unit prices, but shipping, communication, import delays and rework risk should be included in the total project cost.

Is 3D printing cheaper than CNC in Australia?

What’s the best material for functional parts?
