Strong, Heat-Resistant Engineering Plastic

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a proven engineering thermoplastic prized for its strength, impact resistance and heat tolerance. It is the classic choice for enclosures, automotive parts and components that must survive knocks and warm environments.

At Solidium3D we print ABS on calibrated, enclosed workflows for consistent, warp-controlled results. Upload your STL for an instant quote and we will manufacture durable parts ready for real use.

Why Choose ABS

A durable, heat-tolerant material for functional and end-use parts.

Impact Resistant

Absorbs knocks and drops without cracking, tough in service.

Heat Tolerant

Holds up around ~100°C, well above PLA and PETG.

Machinable

Drills, taps, sands and glues cleanly for assembly.

Vapour-Smoothable

Can be finished to a glossy, injection-moulded look.

Lightweight & Rigid

Good stiffness-to-weight for structural parts.

Proven & Affordable

A trusted engineering plastic at a sensible price.

ABS for Enclosures & Automotive

ABS is ideal for housings, enclosures, brackets and automotive trim that face heat, vibration and mechanical stress. Its toughness makes it a dependable choice for parts that are handled or installed inside equipment.

Because ABS machines and bonds well, it is easy to add inserts, fasteners and assemblies. We control orientation and cooling to manage warping on larger parts.

Design Tips for ABS Parts

ABS rewards a few simple design habits. Keep uniform wall thicknesses where you can: big jumps in section thickness cool unevenly and invite warping on large flat areas. Rounding the corners of big flat bases also helps parts stay perfectly flat.

Because ABS machines so well, it is often smartest to print holes slightly undersized and drill them to final size, giving you machine-shop accuracy on the dimensions that matter. Threaded inserts seat beautifully in ABS, so design bosses at 2x the insert diameter for strong assemblies.

If your part will live near heat, tell us the working temperature with your order. We will adjust infill and wall counts so the part keeps its stiffness at temperature rather than just at room conditions.

Finishing & Post-Processing

ABS is the most finishable FDM material we print.

Vapour Smoothing

Acetone vapour melts the surface glassy-smooth for an injection-moulded look.

Sanding & Painting

ABS sands cleanly and takes primer and paint exceptionally well.

Threaded Inserts

Heat-set inserts for strong, serviceable fastening.

Machining

Drill, tap and trim printed parts to final tolerance.

Industries That Choose ABS

A proven engineering plastic trusted anywhere toughness and heat tolerance matter.

Automotive

Interior trim, clips, ducting and under-bonnet brackets.

Electronics

Heat-tolerant enclosures, panels and internal frames.

Industrial Equipment

Guards, housings and impact-exposed machine parts.

Appliances

Durable replacement parts for household equipment.

Robotics

Tough structural parts that shrug off knocks.

What to Send Us

  • 3D file: STL preferred; STEP, STP and OBJ also accepted.
  • Units & scale: millimetres, at real-world size.
  • Working temperature: tell us if the part sees sustained heat.
  • Flat faces: flag large flat bases so we can manage warp with orientation.
  • Finishing: ask for vapour smoothing or painting when you order.
  • Quantity: batch pricing applies automatically in the quote tool.

ABS 3D Printing FAQs

Is ABS stronger than PLA?

ABS is tougher and far more impact- and heat-resistant than PLA, which makes it better for functional and end-use parts, though PLA prints more easily and looks cleaner.

Can ABS parts handle heat?

Yes. ABS tolerates temperatures up to around 100°C, so it suits parts near motors, electronics and warm environments.

Can you smooth ABS parts?

ABS can be vapour-smoothed or sanded and painted for a glossy, near injection-moulded finish. Ask for finishing when you order.

Does ABS warp?

ABS is more prone to warping than PLA or PETG, so we print it in a controlled, enclosed process and optimise orientation to keep parts dimensionally accurate.

Is ABS the same plastic as LEGO bricks?

Essentially yes: LEGO is injection-moulded ABS. That heritage is a good indicator of its toughness, colour stability indoors and pleasant surface feel.

Can you machine printed ABS parts?

Yes. ABS drills, taps, files and sands cleanly, so printed parts can be finished to machine-shop tolerances where a dimension is critical.

Should I choose ABS or ASA?

Indoors, ABS is the cost-effective choice. Outdoors or in direct sun, choose ASA: it matches ABS mechanically but will not fade or embrittle under UV.

How much does ABS printing cost?

Upload your STL for an instant geometry-based price. ABS sits in the affordable engineering tier, above PLA but well below carbon-fibre or PC materials.
