Design Tips for ABS Parts
ABS rewards a few simple design habits. Keep uniform wall thicknesses where you can: big jumps in section thickness cool unevenly and invite warping on large flat areas. Rounding the corners of big flat bases also helps parts stay perfectly flat.
Because ABS machines so well, it is often smartest to print holes slightly undersized and drill them to final size, giving you machine-shop accuracy on the dimensions that matter. Threaded inserts seat beautifully in ABS, so design bosses at 2x the insert diameter for strong assemblies.
If your part will live near heat, tell us the working temperature with your order. We will adjust infill and wall counts so the part keeps its stiffness at temperature rather than just at room conditions.

Is ABS stronger than PLA?
ABS is tougher and far more impact- and heat-resistant than PLA, which makes it better for functional and end-use parts, though PLA prints more easily and looks cleaner.
Can ABS parts handle heat?
Yes. ABS tolerates temperatures up to around 100°C, so it suits parts near motors, electronics and warm environments.
Can you smooth ABS parts?
ABS can be vapour-smoothed or sanded and painted for a glossy, near injection-moulded finish. Ask for finishing when you order.
Does ABS warp?
ABS is more prone to warping than PLA or PETG, so we print it in a controlled, enclosed process and optimise orientation to keep parts dimensionally accurate.
Is ABS the same plastic as LEGO bricks?
Essentially yes: LEGO is injection-moulded ABS. That heritage is a good indicator of its toughness, colour stability indoors and pleasant surface feel.
Can you machine printed ABS parts?
Yes. ABS drills, taps, files and sands cleanly, so printed parts can be finished to machine-shop tolerances where a dimension is critical.
Should I choose ABS or ASA?
Indoors, ABS is the cost-effective choice. Outdoors or in direct sun, choose ASA: it matches ABS mechanically but will not fade or embrittle under UV.
